Familiarize yourself with the property and area

Are you relocating to Sarasota from a different city or neighborhood? Be sure to scope out the area for pet-friendly amenities first. Where are the parks, pet-friendly restaurants, and off-leash dog runs located? Learn all you can about Sarasota neighborhoods so you know where the best pet-friendly places are in the city. If you’re buying a small home or condo, you’ll want to be sure you know where the dog parks, hiking trails, and nature reserves are so your pup can get enough exercise.

Get to know the ins and outs of your new home and property beforehand. Is there a yard? Does it have a fence? Are there any rooms or areas that are unsafe for your pet? You may have to do some home improvements to ensure the property is safe for your pet to roam. Cats are known escape artists, so if you’re unsure about the safety of the outdoor area or are near a busy street, you may want to consider keeping them inside. If you’ve purchased a condo, ensure your pet is only on the balcony when supervised.
 

Find a vet in the area

Sarasota is a city that is chock-full of amenities, including healthcare services for your pet. Do some research on veterinarians in the area by internet searches, asking friends for recommendations, and visiting a few prior to the move. Consider your dog’s age, breed, and any health or behavioral concerns. Some vets may specialize in geriatric care or have experience dealing with fearful or anxious dogs.

While you’re at it, be sure to update their tags and chips with the correct information. Escaping is extra easy on moving day with open doors and moving parts, and pets can easily get lost when they are unfamiliar with the neighborhood. Make proper identification a top priority.
 

Determine where your pet will be on moving day

This is an important, and often-forgotten, factor to keep in mind on moving day: where your pet will actually be and who will take care of them. Pets can easily escape – and will likely be constantly underfoot – during the process. To avoid this, leave your pet at the old house while you get organized in your new Sarasota house or condominium. Get the pet’s bed, crate, toys set up so that they will quickly feel at home when they arrive.

Stick to a schedule

Does your pet normally go out at 7 a.m.? Start the moving process at 8 so you have time for your early morning loop. Does your pet have a daily outing with the dog walker? Even if you’re home packing boxes, hire the dog walker for an extra day to keep your pet distracted and on their regular routine. Moving can be stressful for your pet, so keep to their daily routine as much as possible. While it’s bound to be a busy time for you, take a few moments every so often to give your pet some extra attention, feed them a few treats, or play ball in the backyard.
